Wood Wins Every Time!
Without a doubt, the wooden dollhouse far exceeds in the quality,
the endurance of time, and the potential for detail, its
styrofoam, cardboard and plastic competitors. Wood has the touch
of the classic, lending itself to all sorts of architectural
expression from log cabin to stately Georgian mansion.
Â
The dollhouse, in and of itself, is a thing to be treasured
through the generations, to be appreciated for the love and care
that went into its creation by the forebears who passed it down
(or who will pass it down). Like a patina rich buffet or chest
of drawers, the wooden dollhouse stands the test of time and the
fads of fashion.
Â
Can you imagine a molded plastic dollhouse of such a stature as
our Gibside, for example, lasting intact long enough for it to
be appreciated by a great granddaughter? In the first place, we
would defy any plastics engineer to accommodate such a design as
the Gibside to be brought forth into the marketplace at any
reasonable cost, let alone enduring intact for a century or more.
Then take that concept one step further and think about the hours
of joy and fulfillment lost to the owner in the already molded
and painted brick exterior, or the stones about the foundation,
the plastic balustrade and ‘wrought iron’ railings. The fun of
painting the interior or wallpapering or making the lights work,
all lost in the molded readiness of plastic.
And, what grandparent collectors would pass along a piece that
already in their time has buckled siding and warped windows from
the ups and downs of the climate? Imagine a collector passing
down to his heirs a plastic or cardboard coin collection.
Ridiculous. No, the wooden dollhouse is like the tree it came
from; there and sturdy and classically natural.
Â
The wooden dollhouse, lasting and detailed with love from it’s
beginnings as a design on a piece of paper to its final interior
touch of wallpaper and miniature furniture becomes the expression
of all of those who appreciate it, who decorate it, who play with
it, in it and about it, from the very young to the very old.
The collector and the collection are forever enhanced by that
‘touch of wood’.
